The forthcoming 2020 Ford Explorer will suffer a total redesign. Last time something like this happened was in 2011. This 3-row midsize crossover SUV manages to obtain the spot of one of the best selling models in its segment. Most of the features and cues that were questionable are now looking much better, mostly materials inside the cabin.
Now, the 2020 Explorer comes with a stylish design, great infotainment system, powerful engine lineup and numerous trim levels. Moreover, a hybrid variant is available and the new platform is on the cards as well. If the sources close to the Blue Oval carmaker are reliable, the 2020 Explorer will mark the beginning of the new generation.
2020 Ford Explorer Exterior Redesign
The upcoming 2020 Ford Explorer will ride on a new platform. It is the same architecture as in the Lincoln Aviator. With that in mind, we can conclude that the Explorer will arrive as a rear-wheel drive SUV. Ford released a couple of images of the new Explorer. In those pictures, we can see a hybrid model dressed as a police interceptor. From those images, we can see longer hood, different proportions, sloping roof and more pronouncing beltline.
Tech-Rich Interior
The new platform doesn’t mean more or less space inside the cabin. The 2020 Ford Explorer will still offer ample and generous legroom and headroom. Just like in the previous years, new Explorer will accommodate up to seven passengers. The cabin is really spacious thanks to the perfect layout made by Ford’s designers.
While the Ford Expedition is still a larger SUV, the 2020 Explorer now offers much more in the technology department. Speaking of that, the updated infotainment system is in the offer and it comes with the astonishing amount of connectivity features. Safety is great thanks to the Co-Pilot360 safety suite and it includes the latest safety systems and backup cameras.
2020 Ford Explorer ST
While we are yet to find out the full specs of the 2020 Ford Explorer, we know for sure that the popular ST version will arrive. Ford is now replacing Sport models with the ST variants and the latest example is Ford Edge ST. While the Explorer Sport model generates up to 365 hp the goal for the ST to offer over 400 horses with its 3.5-liter V6 unit. An all-wheel-drive setup will come as standard, the sportier suspension is a must, just like slightly different and sporty exterior design.
EcoBoost and Hybrid Drivetrains
The base model of the 2020 Ford Explorer will run on a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This unit returns 290 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque. This engine will use a 6-speed automatic transmission, however, a 10-speed auto is speculated options as well. Furthermore, a Hybrid variant that will combine a V6 engine and an electric motor will provide 340 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. As we wrote, this hybrid model will be used as a police interceptor and a well-known thing is that the police cars are using a rear-wheel-drive setup.
Price and Arrival Date
The base model of the all-new 2020 Ford Explorer will cost up to $36,000. Top range Platinum trims will start at $53,000 and ST variant $60,000. Explorer Hybrid will hit the markets with the $42,000 price tag. Just by comparing the 2020 model with the one from 2019 we can see a price increase which makes sense. Ford latest SUV suffered a redesign and it will go on sale at the beginning of 2020.
