The next-generation Explorer SUV is already confirmed. However, Blue Oval is still doing some road tests and first spy photos have become available. On the same photos, the 2020 Ford Explorer Platinum was captured. It is the range-topping trim level that is very premium and luxurious.
Just like the whole Explorer’s lineup of trim levels, Platinum will also suffer significant changes. Exterior design is basically all-new and the interior will arrive with astonishing features. On top of that, the level of comfort is higher than before. New Explorer will ride on the D6 platform and it will also offer a sporty ST variant.
Exterior Changes
Some customers will be disappointed to see the Explorer SUV getting a new design. The previous one was very attractive, it needs to be said. However, the new-generation model will look equally good and handsome. Spy photos with the all-new 2020 Ford Explorer Platinum are a perfect example. New Explorer Platinum will introduce redesign to a lower fascia that looks more aggressive now.
It features a hexagonal shape with the gorgeous grille mesh. The side profile won’t introduce any significant changes. Interestingly, there won’t be any difference between the XLT and Platinum models in this category. What really separates Platinum from the base model is the grille mesh, tailpipes and premium wheels (picture below).
The 2020 Explorer will ride on the new D6 platform. The base model will be a rear-wheel-drive vehicle. The Platinum model adds a standard all-wheel-drive which will provide some extra traction. No doubt, Explorer SUV will continue to look handsome and modern.
New Infotainment Display
Interior details are not available yet. Ford already announced some new features such as larger infotainment screen. However, the exact cabin design and the interior layout are not available yet. One thing is certain, new Explorer will offer a fancier cabin. Whatsoever, the 2020 Ford Explorer Platinum will look premium in every possible category.
Redesigned dashboard now sports a two-tier design. Thanks to this, a larger 10.1-inch display will sit on the center stack. One of the most interesting innovations will be a Third-Row PowerFold Seating system. This system folds the third-row flat by the simple touch of a button. That will increase the cargo area and level the floor.
Familiar V6 Engine and New Transmission
The 2020 Ford Explorer Platinum will offer only one engine option. It is a 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 engine that comes with Auto Start-Stop technology. The same engine can be found under the hood of the Explorer ST variant.
Interestingly, powerful V6 produces up to 400 horses with the ST model. Explorer Platinum will be rated at 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. Also, it will use a new 10-speed automatic SelectShift transmission.
2020 Ford Explorer Platinum Price and Release Date
New-generation Explorer will start at $36,500. However, the range-topping 2020 Ford Explorer Platinum will be priced at $60,000.
There will be four trim levels, which includes Limited and ST models. New Blue Oval’s SUV will go on sale in the second half of 2019.
