Blue Oval carmaker is giving the very first update to its Transit van since its introduction in 2016. The 2020 Ford Transit will arrive with numerous significant upgrades. The updates will happen on both passenger and cargo variants. The diesel engine is getting an upgrade, and one new V6 gasoline unit will be available.
Ford did promise more power earlier this year. However, the most significant upgrade will be the all-new all-wheel-drive configuration that is optional. Now, Transit can finally compete against the 4×4 Mercedes Sprinter. The customers can choose between the cutaway and chassis cab models with great payload ratings.
Exterior Upgrades
Most of the changes on the 2020 Ford Transit will happen under the shell. However, the exterior will suffer a little as well. For the start, this van gets a brand-new hexagonal grille. This grille looks way more attractive than the previous one. It sports chromed bars, three of them to be precise.
This grille is especially productive on models with EcoBoost engines because of better cooling. Xenon headlights are optional, along with the LED running lights. Good improvement over the halogen headlights. Both cargo and passenger models will get power-sliding doors as an option.
Interior Features and Safety
From now on, the 2020 Ford Transit will look amazing from the inside. Last Transit model featured an interior design similar to the one in the Focus model. Now, things will change significantly. You can forget about aging buttons and smaller display units.
Everything will now look more premium and upscale. An 8.0-inch touchscreen is standard now. New Sync 3 infotainment system is available as well. The dashboard is all-new and it looks very elegant. A new 4.2-inch display in the instrument panel is available too.
Safety department will get a huge boost as well. Transit van now offers numerous safety aids and driver-assistance features. That includes pedestrian detection, forward automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist. Auto high-beams are standard, but blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control are optional. Comfort will be better now and front seats are offering optional swiveling system.
2020 Ford Transit Gets New Gasoline Engine
Blue Oval will introduce a brand-new engine. The current 3.7-liter gasoline unit will be replaced by the 3.5-liter PFDi EcoBoost V6 powertrain. This potent V6 will be a new standard unit and it will be mated to a new 10-speed automatic transmission.
On top of that, this new gearbox is available on all engine choices. However, exact V6 engine details are not available yet. On the other hand, a 2.0-liter diesel engine is optional. This four-cylinder turbocharged engine can be found in the global Ranger Raptor model. It produces 211 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.
New All-Wheel-Drive System
The forthcoming 2020 Ford Transit will get a full-time all-wheel-drive setup (AWD). This system comes with selectable driving modes and the system can send up to 100 percent of torque to the front wheels. However, diesel engine won’t get this configuration.
Only gasoline engines are offering a new AWD system. Whatsoever, Transit lacked this option for some time now. Its biggest rivals 4×4 Mercedes Sprinter offers a conventional system with selectable low range.
2020 Ford Transit Price and Release Date
Pricing is not available yet. However, the current 2019 Transit starts at $36,000. New 2020 Ford Transit will surely cost more, probably slightly below $40,000. This van will offer new crew van body style, a configuration that carries five passengers. Besides that, cargo, passenger, chassis cab and cutaway configurations are available. The 2020 Transit will go on sale this fall.
