After five years, Chevy Tahoe and Suburban models will get the first major redesign in the full-size body-on-frame SUV segment. That means Ford will have to improve its Expedition and Expedition MAX models as soon as possible. We will compare the new 2021 Ford Expedition with the upcoming 2021 Chevy Tahoe.
Both models are impressive and we’ll see if the latest Chevrolet’s design could help Tahoe to beat its biggest rival. That includes comparing vehicle’s dimensions, level of comfort, performances, and of course, the price.
2021 Ford Expedition vs. 2021 Chevy Tahoe – Performances
Interestingly, two American manufacturers are taking totally different approaches in terms of engine lineup. Chevrolet delivers engines from its full-size pickup truck lineup. On the other hand, Ford opts for a single-engine choice. The 2021 Ford Expedition will use a 10-speed automatic transmission, just like the 2021 Chevy Tahoe. As for the engines, Ford offers only one powertrain and it is a 3.5-liter V6 with 375 horsepower. Moreover, this potent V6 delivers 470 lb-ft of torque. The 2021 Tahoe comes with three engine options, two gasolines, and one diesel.
A 5.3-liter V8 is available as standard. It can produce 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. Expedition’s V6 is more powerful than that. However, Tahoe’s optional 6.2-liter V8 cranks out 420 horses and 460 lb-ft of twisting power. It is a more powerful unit but is also significantly larger than Ford’s 3.5-liter V6. Lastly, there is a diesel that helps Tahoe to generate 277 horses and 460 lb-ft of torque. Chevy is yet to announce its fuel economy figures while Expedition has been rated at 20 mpg combined. Ford said the Expedition will get improved handling just like Chevy claims. Moreover, both models are using the independent rear suspension.
Exterior Dimensions
In terms of size, 2021 Chevy Tahoe and the 2021 Ford Expedition are very close. Tahoe is 210.7 inches long and Expeditions 210.0 inches long. Moreover, the Expedition comes with a slightly longer wheelbase, 122.5 inches vs. 120.9 inches.
Tahoe is 81 inches wide while Expedition 79.9 inches. Lastly, the Expedition is taller with 76. inches and Tahoe are 75.9 inches tall. Overall, Tahoe is slightly longer and wider while Ford Expedition is taller but not by significant margins.
Interior Room
Inside the cabin, these comparisons are more complicated. The 2021 Ford Expedition delivers better headroom but not in the third row. The same is with the legroom, where Expedition offers more space in the first two rows. On the other hand, 2021 Chevy Tahoe is superior in terms of the cargo area. No matter if you fold the seats or not, Tahoe is a much better SUV in terms of cargo space.
Price
At this moment, we only know the price of the 2021 Ford Expedition. The price will start at $54,000 for its base XLT trim level. As for the current Chevy Tahoe, its price starts at over $50,000. Tahoe will introduce significant changes so the price will surely be even higher. Still, there is a chance for Tahoe to cost slightly below Expedition. In our honest opinion, Expedition takes a slight win, but what do you think?
