We don’t know if you remember the old F-150 Lightning model. If you do, it was an extremely popular model which was a high-performance variant of the regular F-150 pickup. The F-150 Raptor stepped in and the world says goodbye to Lightning model, forever. Or maybe not? The 2021 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning is making a comeback, an unofficial one.
Yes, you read it right. The famous pickup is already here and Ford has nothing to with it. Ford’s dealer from Georgia has already made its own version of the iconic model. What is more than interesting, the dealer is selling Lightning pickup with a full Ford’s warranty. He made a pickup that rides on a 5.0-liter V8 and it can deliver 650 horsepower. The news spread so quickly and the fans are already imagining the official return. It is a light at the end of the tunnel, however, Blue Oval is remaining silent for now.
Why Ford Ended Production?
We remember, the disappointment was all over us. In 2004, Blue Oval said goodbye to the F-150 SVT Lightning pickup truck. The weight of the vehicle was the Lightning’s biggest enemy. Building high-performance pickup with too many pounds is a problem. Back in the days, F-150 grew too large in size it was almost impossible to deliver performance-oriented version.
The biggest problem was the braking system. The technology wasn’t ready to support a robust pickup with a high level of acceleration. The braking system didn’t develop enough in the 2000s. Add bulky equipment and the problem is even bigger. The F-150 SVT Lightning ended up the production and lighter variant SVT Raptor kicked in for the rescue.
2021 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning Exterior Design
The exterior looks amazing. The 22-inch wheels are using the same pattern as the last Lightning’s wheels. Side exhaust pipes, lower suspension and SVT badging are all present. The 2021 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning is similar to the F-150 Tremor if you remember this model. It was another high-performance pickup with a sportier design. The Lightning model is also a regular cab vehicle with two doors and shorter wheelbase.
Interior Specs
The cabin of the 2021 Ford F-150 Lightning looks closer to the F-150 Raptor’s cabin. The interior is very upscale and sporty. Leather seats and sportier steering wheel are providing the high-performance feel from the inside. Plenty of chrome trims and carbon fiber materials are visible at first glance. The interior will look modern with plenty of premium amenities. Expect a lot of customization and plenty of optional equipment.
Engine options
Unfortunately, Georgia’s truck dealer made only two models so far. The 2021 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning is using a 5.0-liter V8 supercharged powertrain. It generates up to 650 horsepower which is quite impressive. The supercharger was taken from the Roush Performance company. On the other hand, if the Lightning pickup enters the production, Ford will probably deploy its own engine.
The most likely choice is a V6 twin-turbo that delivers 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. It would be so cool for this pickup to enter the series production. If it happens, no doubt that the Lightning model will be available across the whole globe. For that reason, you can expect different engine options for different markets.
2021 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning Price and Release Date
The all-new 2021 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning could face the same destiny as the Ford Bronco SUV. Popularity, discount, then the huge comeback. The mentioned truck dealer from Georgia is selling its Lightning model for $50,000. There is no way we can predict Ford’s pricing if it happens. The rumors are saying the Blue Oval could take a more serious approach and announce the big return in 2021.
