The upcoming 2022 Ford Fusion has been spied recently. Once a trendy mid-size sedan now enters a new era. North American customers are no longer looking for regular cars. For that reason, Ford came up with the idea of the Fusion Active Wagon variant. It is a crossover-like variant that will go on sale at some point next year.
Dubbed as the soft-roader, Fusion is a high-riding wagon that competes with Buick Regal TourX and Subaru Outback. Fusion sedan is gone now, and this is a perfect replacement for it. The name will remain, although some rumors are suggesting a different name. The spy photos are showing interesting upgrades, but we are still waiting to hear more about performance and the interior.
2022 Fusion Spy Shots
The all-new 2022 Ford Fusion will get the “Active” suffix. Blue Oval is doing this with other soft-roaders such as Fiesta Active and Focus Active. As for the Fusion, the first spy photos are already available. The prototype was spied with a stretched body, borrowed from Focus Wagon that is available overseas. It is a smart move by Ford because the architecture is perfectly hidden.
However, many car experts believe the 2022 Focus will use a modified version of Ford’s CD4 platform. It is an architecture that underpins mid-size cars. Thanks to that, we know that the new Fusion will be a front-wheel-drive model with an optional all-wheel-drive setup. Moreover, the modified platform strongly suggests a plug-in hybrid powertrain option.
What About Performance?
At this moment, it is hard to predict the possible engine lineup. Most likely, the new 2022 Ford Fusion will offer different engine options in different parts of the world. As for the United States, Fusion will probably arrive with a familiar 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo unit. This engine should be offered as standard, while the 2.0-liter turbo-four will be optional engine choice.
As we already wrote, the AWD system will be in the offer, and it will be optional as well. Fusion will use a standard front-wheel-drive setup. The latest reports are also suggesting a high-performance version that will deploy a 2.7-liter V6 engine. This variant will produce up to 330 horsepower and will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in five seconds flat.
2022 Fusion Hybrid
We already said the modified CD4 platform suggests a plug-in hybrid powertrain option. This is not official yet, but the new 2022 Ford Fusion is a very likely candidate for this sort of electrification. The most likely outcome for Fusion Hybrid is a 2.0-liter Atkinson-Cycle inline-four engine. This unit is capable of producing 140 horsepower and 130 lb-ft of torque.
Add an electric motor, and the power will jump to 188 horses. It isn’t the most powerful hybrid variant, but Fusion will deliver around 42 mpg combined. However, this is not official yet, and Blue Oval will reveal more details by the end of the year.
2022 Ford Fusion Price and Release Date
The forthcoming 2022 Ford Fusion will go on sale later in 2021. Fusion name will most likely remain, but Ford will add “Active” suffix as it did with some other models. At this moment, Ford Mondeo is the name for the Fusion model in North America. The price will start at around $30,000. New Fusion will rival Subaru Outback and Buick Regal TourX.
