The upcoming 2022 Ford Mondeo is not official yet. However, according to reliable reports, Mondeo will be launched in Europe by the end of 2021. That means the Blue Oval manufacturer won’t kill its iconic Mondeo model. After the leaked document, some things are clearer now, as we saw the “2022 Mondeo CD542” code. Originally, this code was assigned to replace the Fusion model.
Now, it seems like Ford decided to take a different direction. The Mondeo name will live on, but the exact release date is not available yet. Most likely, the new Mondeo will arrive in the second half of next year. Here’s everything we know about the new Mondeo and its possible changes and upgrades.
Mechanical Changes
The document appears to show a couple of interesting changes. Most importantly, it shows that the 2022 Ford Mondeo will continue with the production. However, it seems like new Mondeo will deploy a rear leaf spring for the first time. At this moment, no European Ford car uses leaf springs.
However, Mondeo will become probably the first model with this setup. To this moment, Mondeo uses a coil spring setup through its four generations. This clearly suggests additional changes under the shell and Mondeo will use a similar leaf spring as Volvo XC90.
2022 Mondeo Spy Shots
Thanks to the last spy shots, we have an idea of how the new 2022 Ford Mondeo could look like. This model will adopt crossover-like styling cues New look is closer to the SUV, but Mondeo won’t be classified as one. Various reports are suggesting that Mondeo will remain a hatchback, despite the latest changes. A prototype looks closer to the Ford Focus Active model, especially with the extended wheelbase.
Moreover, the test mule wears a couple of radical changes. Most upgrades will happen up front, but Mondeo will also receive various changes under the skin. A longer wheelbase will provide more interior room and we can also see an extended B-pillar. This could suggest a new platform as well.
Mondeo Could Borrow Powertrain from the Kuga PHEV
The most likely outcome for the 2022 Ford Mondeo is a plug-in hybrid powertrain option. We don’t know anything about conventional engines and if Ford plans to introduce a new engine. Current Mondeo loses a lot of luggage space due to the battery pack that is placed under the boot floor.
Mondeo could deploy the same configuration as the Kuga PHEV SUV. That includes a 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle gasoline engine and a 10.3kWh battery. With an electric motor, total output is rated at 225 hp and all-electric range is rated at 34 miles.
2022 Ford Mondeo Release Date
While the Fusion model is not available in the United States, a new 2022 Ford Mondeo will be launched in North America. Of course, Mondeo will continue with good sales in Europe, but it will be interesting to see new Mondeo in North America.
Many experts are comparing new Mondeo to the Subaru Outback, although Mondeo is not an SUV. Both models are offering a higher ride and sporty stance. By the time the new Mondeo arrives, Ford will discount four MPV models. The sales of the 2022 Mondeo should begin in the second half of 2021 and its price will surely increase.
