The electrification of certain vehicles is no longer a surprise. The same is with the 2023 Ford Explorer Electric. This model will reportedly arrive in 2023, which makes perfect sense, as the Explorer SUV is a perfect candidate for an all-electric powertrain. About 40 percent of the Ford lineup will be all-electric vehicles by 2023, according to a Detroit-based automotive giant.
The goal is to develop a new Explorer on the brand-new EV platform. The same architecture will underpin the new Bronco SUV and it will support both RWD and AWD systems. Explorer is a well-known three-row SUV with so much to offer. Now, it will get the first EV variant and will follow the footsteps of the Mustang Mach-E crossover and F-150 Lightning truck.
Ford Explorer Electric Specs
The upcoming 2023 Ford Explorer Electric will sit on a new BEV platform. The same architecture will reportedly underpin the Lincoln Aviator EV and Ford Bronco SUVs. Right now, Explorer SUV provides a gasoline turbo-four engine. Optionally, there is a 3.0-liter V6 with 365 hp.
Moreover, the same output can be had with 400 horses. This means the all-electric version will develop over 400 horsepower, without any doubt. Still, we don’t know that much about the Explorer EV, including its driving range and charging time. Blue Oval will provide more details in the coming months.
Charging
The all-new 2023 Ford Explorer Electric, like the F-150 Lightning, should be able to leverage bidirectional power technology to offload 9.6 kW of power, if not more. During a power outage or when electricity costs are higher than the cost of charging the EV, it will most likely be possible to power dwellings.
Vehicle-to-vehicle charging should be another bidirectional power transfer capability, allowing Explorer customers to assist other EV users in the event of a power outage or charge depletion in a remote place. There’s also the convenience of being able to use power tools, electronics, and appliances anywhere with the Explorer EV’s battery, such as on a worksite and even camping in the wild.
Battery Pack
Blue Oval manufacturer said the plan is to invest in electrification, so around 40 percent of the brand’s lineup will be all-electric by 2030. The 2023 Ford Explorer Electric is one of the first models that will get full electrification. Ford will develop new “IonBoost” lithium-ion batteries.
On top of that, the carmaker will deliver an “IonBoost Pro” lithium iron phosphate battery pack. Thanks to that, we expect serious improvements in terms of driving range, although we don’t know the exact details. Still, the Explorer EV will surely provide an astonishing all-electric range on a single charge.
2023 Ford Explorer Electric Release Date
As we said, the new 2023 Ford Explorer Electric will arrive along with the Lincoln Aviator EV. Before that, Ford will launch the F-150 Lightning truck and Mustang Mach-E crossover. Reportedly, Explorer EV will hit the dealerships in the first half of 2023, so it could arrive as a 2024MY. The price is not available yet. However, we know that the range-topping trim level will feature an impressive 15.5-inch touchscreen working with the SYNC 4A infotainment system.
