The S650 plan was supposed to have been postponed until 2026. However, that is no longer the case. According to reliable reports, the 2023 Ford Mustang S650 will go on sale. It is the seventh-generation Mustang and it will be produced in Flat Rock, Michigan.
The thing is that no one knows what exactly to expect from the next-gen Mustang? For a start, electrification is a must in our opinion. Ford has patented a hybrid V8 engine that is boosted by two electric motors, both of which drive the front wheels. This means the all-wheel-drive system will be standard. Now, the first spy photographs are available. The new model is obviously based on the existing S550 Mustang GT and here’s everything you need to know.
2022 Mustang S650 Spy Photos
The prototype of the 2023 Ford Mustang S650 has mild camouflage on the front end. Moreover, the front fascia will wear some of the features currently available in the current model. The lower splitter and side skirts are from the new Mach 1. Furthermore, the dual-tip exhaust is an option on the GT and EcoBoost versions. The wheels are from the Mach 1 Handling Pack and are easy to spot.
The execution of the rear brakes is maybe the most impressive component of this prototype. Whereas the “regular” Mustang GT has a tiny rear caliper at the “back” of the rotor, this prototype has a considerably bigger caliper on the “forward” end of its rotor. Moreover, it comes with a small parking brake on the “back.”
This arrangement is not available at the S550 Mustang model or any of its variants. According to reliable sources, this new brake configuration might be related to AWD. Similar braking systems can be found on the Infiniti QX50, BMW M850i, and Dodge Charger GT.
What About Possible Engine Options?
Right now, we don’t know which engine will power the new 2023 Ford Mustang S650. However, some information could hint at what’s to come for the pony car lineup in general. The basic engine is expected to be the existing 2.3-liter EcoBoost unit, boosted by Ford’s PowerBoost hybrid technology from the F-150. The 5.0L V8 is expected to stay in the lineup, but it will now serve as the mid-level powertrain option.
On the other hand, this engine will come with a manual gearbox, which is great to hear. Still, some fans may be disappointed with the top-of-the-line engine choice, which is said to be a 3.5L PowerBoost Hybrid V6. This unit performs admirably in the F-150, but people were expecting more power for sure.
2023 Ford Mustang S650 Launch Date
More details on the upcoming 2023 Ford Mustang S650 and its sedan brother will be released as the year progresses. Most likely launch date is the August 2022. Right now, Mustang leads the way with 72,500 sales in the United States in 2019. Mustang is followed by the Dodge Challenger and Chevy Camaro so it will be interesting to see this rivalry in the coming years.
