After the F-150 Lightning, Blue Oval manufacturer also plans to introduce the 2023 Ford Ranger Lightning. As you know, hybrid and all-electric vehicles are both the present and the future. The emission standards are rigorous so the manufacturers are slowly ditching traditional combustion engines. The Ranger model will offer a hybrid powertrain, for a start.
However, the Lightning variant with all-electric power will surely enter production in the near future. Ford used the Lightning name during the 90s and 2000s. Now, this iconic name is once again here. Firstly, on the new F-150 pickup truck, and shortly after, Ranger will wear the same designation. Here’s everything you need to know about this new truck.
New Platform
As we already said, Blue Oval will introduce the mid-size Ranger with a hybrid powertrain option. This is a very logical outcome, as the Ranger model is sharing the T6.2 platform with the Ford Bronco SUV. However, the carmaker is working on two brand-new architectures. The 2023 Ford Ranger Lightning will sit on one of these two platforms. The first one is the GE2 unibody chassis.
The second one is the body-on-frame TE1 architecture. Reportedly, both platforms will be able to accommodate an all-electric powertrain. We saw the Ranger-like silhouette during one of Ford’s presentations. This clearly indicated that the all-electric Ranger is on the horizon.
What About Performances?
We have three options when it comes to the 2023 Ford Ranger Lightning and its powertrain options. The Blue Oval could simply use the same setup as in the Mustang Much-E crossover. Furthermore, borrowing a powertrain from the Ford F-150 Lightning is also a possibility. The third outcome is the least likely to happen and that is developing a completely new configuration.
The base Mustang Mach-E crossover produces 265 hp and 315 lb-ft of torque. On top of that, the best-possible configuration delivers 345 hp and a torque of over 600 lb-ft. As for the F-150 Lightning, this model will develop around 500 horsepower and 775 lb-ft of torque. Both models are offering impressive driving range and great capabilities. However, it is too early to know more about Ranger Lightning and its specs. Anyway, it will be another potent and reliable model, without any doubts.
2023 Ford Ranger Lightning Launch Date
The forthcoming 2023 Ford Ranger Lightning will reportedly go on sale in the first half of 2023. This is not official yet, but reliable reports are predicting the production will start in the coming months. So far, we’ve seen a couple of interesting renderings. This Ranger will feature LEDs on the closed-off grille, futuristic wheels, and new bodywork while remaining a mid-size pickup truck.
Naturally, the biggest rivals will be models offered by Rivian, Tesla, and Chevrolet. The price is not available yet, of course. Still, this all-electric mid-size pickup truck won’t come cheap. We are waiting for Blue Oval to release the first details, so stay tuned.
