The forthcoming 2023 Ford Ranger Thunder is reportedly on the way. We don’t know that much about this model. However, Ford recently applied for a Thunder badge for models pickup trucks such as Ford F-150, Maverick, and Ranger. The Blue Oval carmaker didn’t apply for the Thunder name in Australia, yet.
This is a very interesting topic, as the F-150 Lightning is on the way. It is an all-electric variant, so what does Thunder mean? Many experts believe the Thunder will be an off-road Ranger model with an electric powertrain. It sounds reasonable, although Ranger already offers off-road variants such as Tremor and Raptor.
Ford Ranger Thunder What Is It?
As we said, applications for the F-150 Thunder and Maverick Thunder have been filed recently by Ford. Whatsoever, the 2023 Ford Ranger Thunder will arrive in Canada as well. However, its arrival in Australia is very uncertain at the moment. As for Europe, the Old Continent already had a Ranger Thunder truck in 2020. it was a limited edition, so only 4,500 trucks were produced.
This model brought styling cues from the Ranger Wildtrak. It was available with a 2.0-liter twin-turbo diesel engine that also powered Ranger Raptor. Therefore, Ford could repeat a similar story with the new Ranger Thunder. The idea is the incorporate off-road elements, improved mechanics, and much more. However, will this truck arrive with an all-electric powertrain like the F-150 Lightning?
Electric Powertrain
Can the Thunder trademark mean that Ford plans to introduce a new all-electric truck? Many truck experts are saying exactly that. The 2023 Ford Ranger Thunder should arrive as an off-road variant with fully electric power. Some rumors are predicting a plug-in hybrid model. However, Ford applied for Maverick pickup as well, and this model already offers a standard plug-in hybrid engine. Even the F-150 comes with a PowerBoost hybrid setup.
As for the electric off-road variant, it would reportedly be able to produce 563 horsepower. Furthermore, the Ranger Thunder should offer 775 lb-ft of torque. That is a lot of power for a mid-size truck. Per source, this variant will provide around 300 miles of driving range on a single charge. This model is happening, that is almost official, but we are still waiting to hear the first details.
2023 Ford Ranger Thunder Launch Date
The upcoming 2023 Ford Ranger Thunder should arrive in the coming months, most likely by the end of the year. This means that Blue Oval will reveal more details in the following weeks. The price is impossible to predict right now because no one knows what the „Thunder“ designation will be.
The mid-size Ranger truck starts at $25,000, and even the Ranger Raptor is making a comeback in the United States. Now we are waiting to see if the Thunder will be an off-road electric variant or not. It could be an appearance package, so stay tuned.
