Ford covers basically every segment in the automotive industry. That includes small and larger SUVs and pickup trucks. Moreover, minivans, hatchbacks, and sedans are also in the offer. So what is next for the Blue Oval manufacturer?
One thing that is not in the offer is an affordable pickup truck. It does make perfect sense for Ford to create a model that will be sold under $20,000. SUVs and trucks are the future, no doubt about it. According to various reports, Ford will debut its small pickup at some point this year.
Entry-Level Pickup Will Ride on Focus’ Platform
According to numerous reports, Ford’s entry-level truck will ride on the European Focus architecture. It is a unibody platform that can accommodate smaller engines such as 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Thanks to that, the new pickup will arrive as a four-door model and it will feature a long box in the back. And just like the Focus, this model will arrive as a front-wheel-drive vehicle.
Moreover, an all-wheel-drive setup will be optional. Besides 2.0-liter four-cylinder, a new truck will use an 8-speed automatic transmission. As for the dimensions, the upcoming pickup will get car-like dimensions. You can look at it as on the EcoSport SUV that is an entry-level company’s SUV.
Production to Start in Mexico
Again, various reports are writing about a new pickup truck that will be built in Hermosillo plant in Mexico. The very same plant currently produces Ford’s Fusion model and Lincoln’s MKZ. Interestingly, these two models are entering the last year of production. That means there will be a place in the plant for the new model. According to reliable sources, Ford plans to sell around 100,000 examples of the new pickup truck.
On the other hand, not all of these units will arrive in the U.S. Other countries will also get this entry-level variant. That includes Canada, Europe, and Latin America. The sales should start by the end of 2021. This truck is codenamed “P758” and it will be available for $5,000 less than the current Ranger that starts at $24,000.
Bronco Pickup Will Arrive Before 2024?
Besides the new entry-level pickup truck, Ford plans to deliver a Bronco pickup as well. According to sources close to Blue Oval company, this model will go on sale before 2024. Ford clearly plans to deliver variations of the Bronco model, including the truck version.
Thanks to that, Ford will cover everything from the under $20,000 pickup to the Ranger mid-size and Super Duty trucks. However, we don’t know yet where the Bronco will slot in the company’s lineup.
